You’ve probably heard of intuitive eating. It’s been a buzzword in the health industry for a while now. But what the hell does it really mean?
Intuitive eating is a non-dieting approach to living a healthy lifestyle. It’s about knowing what your body wants, and eating when you’re truly hungry to balance blood sugar levels. It’s a lifestyle that you can jump right back on track with and not be hard on yourself if you slip up from time to time. It’s about balancing healthy foods with allowing yourself to indulge in cravings from time to time (if you’re out to dinner or reallllyyy want that ice cream one night).
It’s understanding what to eat, and being able to understand what your body needs (if you’re craving sugar, maybe you’re thirsty and just need some water or craving the nutrients from an apple). It’s educating yourself on food labels and understanding what’s ACTUALLY in the foods you’re eating. It’s about eating mostly whole foods and not processed garbage disguised as food.
I love and live by intuitive eating because it’s about a lifestyle, NOT a diet.
Diets don’t work and diets have not been proven to maintain weight loss in the long term. Why don’t diets work? They are not conducive to a lasting lifestyle. Most diets will cut something out (including entire food groups such as carbs). Most diets cannot be sustained over the long haul. When someone slips up, they usually ditch the diet completely and go back to their old way of eating and regain all of the weight they lost. Diets promote water weight loss. So you may see immediate results but as soon as you stop the diet, the water weight will come right back.
The BEST thing you can do for your health is to understand how to eat intuitively and incorporate that into your lifestyle so that it works for you.
